I love seeds and could spend an entire month’s paycheck on them with the excuse that I am “building up my seed bank”. But the reality is, my seed bank is busting at the seams with really great future plants. But where did I buy my organic seeds?
Well, friend, I have a few favorite places to snag great seed packets. Some are really cheap, some are for hard to find, some are just indulgent. But I hope you can find some favorite seed retailers in this list.
Organic and high Quality Seed Companies
Why is it important to buy good seeds?
Why should you choose reputable seed companies?
Well in short, you want to have seeds that aren’t grown with unnecessary chemicals, that have good germination rates, and that will fill your garden with abundant vegetables and flowers!
Not all seeds are created equal and please don’t buy seeds on Amazon. There is not regulation over who is selling and you could be sent seeds that are invasive to your areas {accidentally or intentionally}.
I am not an affiliate for every seed company out there. And others I would be if they had one. Below you will find my recommendations regardless of if I earn money from the links or not. But I do earn from qualifying purchases of any with an * by the link.
Seeds Now
I have been buying Seeds Now Seeds since 2012. They are non-GMO, organic seeds and I love that they aren’t crazy expensive! My very, very favorite thing about them is that they have $0.99 sampler packs*. This means I don’t have to commit to a plant I have never grown and it also means I am just not spending a ton of money.
Baker Creek
This is my go-to for the more unique seeds on my list. They don’t have the name Rare Seeds for no reason! I have gotten everything from Rainbow corn to Ghost Peppers. When they have noticed a low germination rate, they send more seeds in the packet to make up for it. And their packaging is beautiful with photographs on the front of each one.
Botanical Interests
Especially if you are a beginner gardener, these are the perfect seeds. Why does it matter? Because the seed package is exceptionally designed to give you all of the planting information you need. There is so much that it covers the front, back, and even inside of the seed package. Of course, I buy these seed as well so they’re not just for beginners. But what a huge blessing for a first time gardener.
High Mowing
Living in New England, this is a local company as they are in Vermont. I like their seeds as they are organic and always seem to grow well for me.
Johnny’s
Again, this is a local-to-me New England company as they are in Maine! Johnny’s has amazing staff to help you in whatever region you’re in and they sell to both large scale farmers and small scale gardeners. My favorite things to buy from them are onion sets, sweet potato slips, and seed potato.
My favorite seed starting supplies
I believe in using what you have and making upcycled seed starter trays where it makes sense. There are always times when it’s good to invest in good seed starting supplies or where there are helpful goods.
We currently have a small indoor greenhouse and hopefully something more substantial soon. Several years ago in 2011, we built 36 square feet of grow space and grow light system with a shelving unit.
Bootstrap Farmer
I really like this company. I have three of their 200 gallon grow bags that worked phenomenally for our potatoes and sweet potatoes. They have a huge amount of seed starting trays though and their quality is no match! they are slightly more expensive than what you’ll find on Amazon but totally worth every penny and will last you longer. They also have heated seed starting mats and a whole lot more!
I also like to read through my “Starting Seeds” book every year just to brush up. You’ll find it below:
